Magento 1.6 Minimum Advertised Price (MAP)

June 16, 2011 by Bob Brodie

Magento 1.6.0.0-beta1 was released today, and has some pretty nifty features. One of those is an implementation of “Minimum Advertised Price”, or MAP. Many vendors enforce restrictions on how low of a price you can show on your site, until either adding it to your cart or performing come action. Here’s how to take advantage of this feature:

First, enable MAP. It’s under Admin > System > Configuration, on the Sales tab. There’s an accordion panel titled Minimum Advertised Price. Here’s your options:

  • Enable MAP – Yes / No
  • Apply MAP (default value) – This is the master switch. (For some reason, I couldn’t get it working unless this was set to yes – even if it was set to yes at the product level.)
  • Display actual price – This is another default setting. Your options are “In Cart”, “Before Order Confirmation”, and “On Gesture”. I’ll cover these in a minute.
  • Default Popup Text Message – This is the text that will show up at the bottom of the popup when “On Gesture” is enabled.
  • Default “What’s This” Message – This is the text that shows when you click the “What’s this?” link.
Next, create your item. I’m going to assume that you are familiar with this process. When you get to the Pricing tab, you’ll see three new options:

Under Apply Map:

  • Yes – This option will apply MAP to the product page
  • No – This option will cause MAP not to apply
Display Actual Price – In Cart

Display Actual Price – Before Order Confirmation

Display Actual Cart – On Gesture

Keep in mind that you shouldn’t rely on any beta functionality as it may go away in the stable version!

Take the SUMOs Bowling: SUMO Heavy Co-Sponsors the PhilaMade 2011 Kickoff Party.

February 4, 2011 by John Suder

PhilaMade is a newly formed networking group for creative professionals living/working in the 215/610 area code.

Group organizer Joe Rinaldi (of Happy Cog) asked us (along with MissionStaff) to help sponsor their 2011 kick-off party and we were more than happy to help out.

Over 60 people showed up at North Bowl in Northern Liberties to bowl a few frames, hoist many Kensingers and share some good grub (including the now-famous North Bowl Tater Tots).

As someone who’s made the rounds in the Philly business networking scene, it was a refreshing change (no insurance salesman). The crowd was full of like-minded folks working and engaging in all forms of creative endeavours.

We look forward to more of these meet-ups and encourage you to check them out on Facebook and connect with some really great people.

Update: A great set of event photos by Jennifer Helene are now up on the PhilaMade Flickr page.

SUMO Heavy Industries makes a big dent in eCommerce

January 25, 2011 by Bart Mroz

We got a quick write up in Flying Kite Media http://www.flyingkitemedia.com/innovationnews/sumo0125.aspx

In addition to its catchy name, Philadelphia’s SUMO Heavy Industries also has a catchy concept: Select just one vital piece of web development and turn that expertise into a whole company. Bart Mroz and associates Robert Brodie and John Suder focus strictly on digital commerce.

TEDxPhilly is coming up

November 10, 2010 by Bart Mroz

We are excited to be going to the first TEDxPhilly.

TEDxPhilly is an opportunity to celebrate what is happening right here, right now in Philadelphia and beyond.

This daylong event will investigate the theme of right here, right now through multiple lenses and in textured ways. It is within local and personal spaces that larger political, cultural, and economic decisions are negotiated. The TEDx platform provides a space for Philadelphia-connected speakers and audience members to address some of the most pressing issues of today, and examine how those issues shape and are shaped by our sense of ‘here’ and ‘now’.

The lineup of speakers is incredible and it should be a great learning experience.

With that we will be closed for the whole day November 18, 2010.

BarCamp Philadelphia is 17 days away

October 26, 2010 by Bart Mroz

For the 3rd time in a row we are headed to BarCamp Philadelphia – and you should, too.  If you do not know what BarCamp is:

According to Wikipedia, Barcamp is “…an international network of user generated conferences — open, participatory workshop-events, whose content is provided by participants — often focusing on early-stage web applications, and related open source technologies, social protocols, and open data formats.”
More importantly, it is a great way to see what the community has to offer and learn new things.  We also decided to sponsor the event. We do not sponsor many events but we think that this is an important for the community involved.

TechnicallyPhilly Writes About SUMO!

June 21, 2010 by Bart Mroz

There’s a post this week over at TechnicallyPhilly about us. They give a glimpse into the history of the company and a peek at our future world domination plans.

In March 2008, Mroz co-founded round3media and by last November, Mroz had learned his greatest skills were focusing strictly on e-commerce site development. After his two partners in round3 wanted to work on different projects, Mroz started anew, launching e-commerce heavy SUMO with new partner Robert Brodie and creative director John Suder.

Better way of delivering transactional email with Postmark and Magento

January 6, 2010 by Bart Mroz

Email delivery for web apps.

From the makers of Newsberry, Postmark helps deliver and track transactional emails for web applications. Don’t worry about setup, scaling and server maintenance, we already excel at this. Read more on our blog.

We are very exited to release this plugin. We have been looking at transactional email and the importance of making sure that that email gets delivered. You know – those fun emails that notify you that you did buy something and that the product did ship so you can stay home from work and wait for the UPS guy to show up.
So our friends at Wildbit have been working on a better way to deliver transactional emails. They are calling it Postmark.
