Digital Transformation: The Key to Efficiency

The digital age has rapidly transformed the way we do business. The more technology advances, the more efficient business becomes. It’s important to be up to date when it comes to new technology to ensure the highest level of performance. That’s one reason why Digital Transformation is so important.

What exactly is digital transformation?

Back in 2016, TechCrunch published a piece detailing the newest “Digital Transformation” buzzword. They pointed out that Digital Transformation requires a total organizational commitment. In 2021, it’s not just a fancy buzzword, but necessary for growth.

At SUMO Heavy, when we’re talking about digitally transforming your business, we primarily focus on digitizing Accounting and Logistics, Customer Support, Development Methodologies, and Leadership Operations. We work with our clients to thoroughly analyze and identify each of the parts of their business that would benefit from digitization. We then create a strategic plan that addresses any issues identified during our competitive analysis.

Think for a minute about IKEA’s infamous digital transformation. For almost 80 years, IKEA has been distinctly associated with a massive physical catalogue, as well as other traditional, not-so-digital business models. But, three years ago IKEA Retail (Ingka Group) hired Barbara Martin Coppola, and since then the company has digitized most of their operations. In fact, since dropping the catalogue, revamping their ecommerce, and digitizing even their floor plan, the company has tripled their eCommerce footprint.

Where Do You Begin?

One of the most common areas of a business that needs to be digitized is the accounting and logistics processes. While some people may prefer to do their books manually, you should consider digitizing your process. Digitization will improve the speed, efficiency, and accuracy of the financial process. At SUMO Heavy, we identify the best accounting and shipping software for your business. We then develop a plan to formalize the existing processes and find the right implementation partners and see the plan through all the way until the end of our roadmap.

Another observation is that it’s rare to see a workflow entirely updated and in-tune with a business’s needs. The reasons are varied: It could be a cultural misalignment, or it could be an issue with regulatory compliance. Either way, it’s important to ensure that clients’ inefficiencies don’t grow with their development and operational teams. Interviewing leadership, engineers, and operational departments, allows a team to implement development workflows that solve for accountability and efficiency. This allows a team to deploy more features that are less error-prone and comply with regulatory requirements.

Take a Look at The People Involved

We’ve also noticed that a company with non-technical leadership is bound for catastrophe. Staff misaligned with leadership can lead to high turnover, low throughput, and high rates of error. It’s important to make it a top priority to work with client’s leadership to ensure they are willing to move the company into a digital direction – or to bring in the right people that can. This aids in setting long-term goals guided by technology and leaders willing to accept that with open arms.

“Digital Transformation” can sound very intimidating, but in the end, it’s just the opposite. It is crucial to make sure your team is using the most thorough and time-efficient processes to ensure a smooth transition and lasting results.
